prince at the forum Organized by Steven Bankhead and Jesse Benson. Photo Journal by Ginger Van Hook

Saturday, March 24 – Sunday, May 6, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CA —

Beacon Arts is pleased to announce the group exhibition Prince at the
Forum. Initially inspired by the geographic juxtaposition between Beacon Arts Building
and stadium venue The Forum in Inglewood, Prince at the Forum utilizes the
potential for slippage of meaning in the exhibition’s title to allow for a pluralistic voice
from an array of artists working in different media, modes and concepts.
In developing the exhibition, the organizers considered the
ancient Roman forum, the complex social histories of The Great Western Forum, and the
definition of “beacon” as something that has potential to both summon and warn off. Taken from
the headlines of a religion-filtered concert series performed by Prince in 2011, the exhibition’s title
gives way to the exploration of a broad range of dualistic themes such as site/nonsite, past/present,
power/weakness, chastity/desire, and vulgarity/taste. The works being produced for the show are
totally interdisciplinary and will include drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video,
performance, and collaborative works.

A catalogue featuring new texts will be produced and released in conjunction with a second event
organized by Steven Bankhead toward the close of the exhibition.
Prince at the Forum runs from Saturday, March 24 to Sunday, May 6, 2012. Exhibition special
events include an opening reception on Saturday March 24, 6:00 - 9:00pm with musical
performance by Big Girls [Hannah Greely and Elana Scherr] and a Catalog Release Champagne
Brunch with special event (to be announced) on Sunday April 29 1-4pm.
The exhibition closes Sunday, May 6, 1:00 - 4:00pm
with organizers Steven Bankhead and Jesse Benson in attendance.
